A chess board vision trainer for Mac and Windows

Before any tactic can be found, it has to be noticed. Board Vision drills the scan every strong player runs automatically: checks, winning captures, threats, and which of your own pieces is doing the least.

The habit before the tactic

Six question types, asked about real positions: is there a check? a winning capture? a threat you could create? a piece you could meaningfully improve? and, when a threat already exists against you, did you deal with it soundly? Nothing is handed to you in advance -- you decide which, if any, apply.

Positions come from your own games or from random legal positions, so the scan gets practised on exactly the kind of position you actually sit in front of.

True visualisation, as a difficulty dial

Turn the difficulty up and the board stops updating after a move: the real position keeps advancing in your head, not on screen, and the same questions get asked about a position you never saw rendered. That's the same skill under harder conditions, not a different one -- true visualisation is Board Vision practised blind.

Missed items come back on the same spaced-repetition review schedule as the rest of your training, so a scan you got wrong is one you will see again.

Questions

Good to know

What is board vision in chess?

It is the habit of scanning a position for checks, captures and threats before deciding on a move -- the skill that has to come before a tactic can even be found.

Is this the same as Chess Mastery Trainer's Tactics mode?

No. Tactics gives you a position already known to have a winning idea. Board Vision asks you to notice what is actually there first, including when nothing is.
